Instructions
Preparation
Heat the butter and milk in a pan until butter is melted. Make sure the mixture doesn't get warmer than 30 degrees Celsius or 86 degrees Fahrenheit. A higher temperature has as result that the yeast can not do its job anymore.
Mix the flour, sugar, yeast, orange zest and pinch of cinnamon in a bowl.
Add the lukewarm milk mixture, the egg and a pinch of salt to the bowl of dry ingredients. Use a whisk to mix everything and to stir out the lumps.
Cover the bowl of dough with a damp kitchen towel, and place the bowl on a warm spot in your house. Let the dough rest for at least 40 minutes on room temperature.
In the meanwhile..
Cut the apple in small pieces, and sprinkle some lemon juice on top once finished. This will prevent the apple pieces from turning brown. Moreover you can soak the raisins in hot water for about 10 minutes.
Preheat the fryer to 180 degrees Celsius or 356 degrees Fahrenheit.
Add some kitchen towel to a clean bowl, so you can place the fried 'oliebollen' on this when they are ready.
Baking time!
Add the apple and raisins to your raised dough, and mix gently.
Time to bake! The easiest thing is to use an ice cream scoop to scoop the dough in the fryer. If you don't have an ice cream scoop, you can also use 2 spoons to make a dough ball and drop it in the fryer.
It should take about 6 minutes before the oliebollen are ready. However, this depends on the size. So keep a close eye, and bake the 'oliebollen' until golden brown and crisp.
Serving
Serve the 'oliebollen' as soon as possible and with a lot of powdered sugar. Happy New Year! [Dutch: Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!]
